0 - Nothing

The fundamental question of metaphysics: "Why is there anything at all rather than nothing?"

Where can we start except with nothing?

Any ontology which starts with a sort of being is begging the question. We must start by interrogating the nature or lack of nature of non-being.

So let us start by diving into this void of non-being and ask what it is like.

Simply put, it is not like anything. Use the word "nothing" to points away from all things, all attributes.

Anything that comes to mind when you think of nothing, not that.

Nothing is not empty space. It has no dimensions.

Nothing is not dark. It isn't even transparent. It has no relation to light or vision.

Nothing is neither quiet nor any sound.

... but is it fair to say that nothing is not any of these? Is not the negation itself applying a sort of attribute to nothing?

00 - Unlimited

The next step in our exploration of the void before being is to realize that it is not only not anything we can think of but it is also not-not anything.

Things that have being are defined not just as they are but what they are not. Not just what they can do but also what they cannot do.

To enter into being is to become in some way limited. The nothing before being is unlimited. Anything may follow from it...

000 - All Possibility

Nothing is itself the generative force from which all being issues.

Nothing by simply being no-thing is not limited to remain nothing.

Void, by being unlimited, permits all being, all possibility to occur.

All-possibility is still a sort of non-being, still nothing. Various possibilities are in conflict and contradiction.

To continue we must move into the seed of being...

0⋮1 - Chaos

Chaos, the principle of being without reason.

Things come into being simply because nothing prevents this. Coming into being is a constant force arising from the instability of non-being. Chaos inherits this instability and only by chance evolves beyond it.

The physics of quantum mechanics elucidate this principle. For example, the double-slit experiment shows the principle of superposition, that physical systems can be in an indeterminate state that spontaneously resolves to a determinate state when measured. In as much as the system is non-determined is the principle of all-possibility in non-being. Assuming a specific unpredictable state upon measurement is this most fundamental principle of Chaos.

The sigil of Chaos, , is formed from the sigils for zero, . and one, , These numbers relate to identity functions of addition of zero and multiplication by one.

0⋮1 - Chaos : Primal Fire

Elementally this is the principle of fire in its highest state.

Non-being may be imagined as an infinite ocean. It stretches out in all directions in darkness but is stirred from its depth by a mysterious force. Waves ripple out and interact throwing up a fine spray that phosphoresce in the darkness. These tiny sparks depart from the void for a moment, but within each spark may be a moment, a life, a civilization, or an entire universe. Even the vastest span of being is nothing next to the void which birthed it and awaits its return.

1⋮2 - Process

Process is the principle that being which emanates from Chaos remains incomplete, containing and in communication with the void which birthed it. Within being, non-being becomes a thing in relation: a space, a possibility.

This connection to void allows emanation to continue by holding space for possibility. Everything has being by its ability to be in relation to other things. That one thing may be above another or below, within or without. Every property is standing in relation which is preceded by the possibility held.

The continuing process of emanation is like the flow in a cosmic game of improvisation. Each being in each moment has space in which something by follow and from that something else in and endless chain or web.

The sigil of Process, , is formed from the sigils for one, , and two, . These being the simplest mutations of addition and multiplication, sequence and doubling.

1⋮2 - Process : Path Numbering

Each path is numbered twice. The first number is the emanation number and is given by the order in which the paths appear in the process of emanation. The second is the Fool's Journey number and is assigned by a sequential walk of the paths of the tree. Both numberings start at zero so in this simplest case both numbers are zero.

1⋮2 - Process : Primal Waters

Elementally Process is the principle of water in its highest state. The flow of Process is the flow of water conforming to its vessel and reforming it through its constant action.

As the spark of being departs the Void its reflection appears within the surface of the waters. The waters fade and Chaos and its reflection, Process remain. A radiant light and a radiant darkness. This dance between being an non-being carries forth every stage of emanation.

2⋮3 - Pattern

A flow of process can be united by a pattern that describes the flow and summarizes its activity and anticipates where it will go. This creates a unity of disparate elements which hang together by their permitting the space for relation between them.

The sigil of Pattern, , is formed from the sigils for two, , and three, . Two being the next number in sequence and three being the second prime number.

2⋮3 - Pattern : First Cycle

2⋮3 - Pattern : Connection through Space

Elementally Pattern is the principle of air in its highest state.

3⋮5 - Form

Within pattern there emerge nodes within it, emergent phenomena.

The numbering of the spheres is first by sequence starting with zero and second by prime number. Five is the third prime number, hence the numbering associated with this sphere. That five is the third prime is simply a fact in number. Likewise twin primes are prime numbers two apart such as five and seven. Every twin prime pair greater than these are divisible by twelve. These are just a couple of the infinite forms that occur just within the counting numbers.

A key aspect of these forms is that they occur within relation. Even a simple form such as the number five is only itself because of how it stands in relation to other numbers within the pattern of number generally.

Elementally this is the principle of earth in its highest state.

The sigil of Form, , is formed from the sigils for three, , and five, . Three continues numbering by sequence and five is the third prime. Note that the path with emanation number five, , also appears at this step. Through the paths everything relates to everything else.

3⋮5 - Form : Fixity of Earth

4⋮7 - Change

The flow of emanation may stop to create a static world such as the world of number, or it may create unstable dynamic worlds which constantly collapse upon themselves and regrow into the voids opened. This is the fundamental nature of change, that existence is fleeting of coming into being and falling back out of being.

The sigil of Change, , is formed from the sigils for four, , and seven, . With the prime seven, in its sphere it also occurs in the path connecting Form and Change. Note that no longer is all connected to all. A constraint on path formation is that the emanation number of the path may not exceed the prime number of the sphere.

In the separation of Change from Form the path with emanation number four, , remains connected to Form while the path with emanation number five, , is carried by Change. Might this have gone the other way? In short, yes, but it is a less stable configuration as Process and Change together are too volatile and Pattern and Form too static. This is the first of three such possible variations.

4⋮7 - Change : Descent of Fire

This is fire having descended from the divine spark to take on a destructive nature to compliment its creation.

With the descent of fire Chaos is now elementally spirit.

5⋮11 - Agent

Within the flow of change there may emerge self-sustaining agents, dynamic self-reinforcing systems that create a sort of homeostasis.

In the primordial soup of self-catalyzing reactions molecules that have this property multiply. In the right conditions and given enough time more complex agents emerge in the process of natural selection.

Conway's Game of Life provides a perfect example of a simple agent in the "glider". In the simple world of this game the glider is a self-replicating pattern that moves itself across the landscape. It is a self-sustaining and replicating form sustaining itself through change.

The sigil of Agent, , is formed from the sigils for five, , and eleven, . Note this sigil for five is used specifically for sequence and differs from the factor sigil . Having separate symbol sets becomes useful particularly useful to distinguish between emanation numbers of the paths and the fool's journey sequence which will be introduced soon.

5⋮11 - Agent : Left Over Right

As this is a diagram of the Agent, we may ask of it, which way is it facing?

How we answer this is a question of handedness and is a matter of personal preference, however we note that with an object such as the elemental pentagram we position it in an orientation for use. The question for the pentagram is which direction is it pointing or projecting, out or in? However, if this is an agent it is natural to flip it around so that it "faces" us. It's right-hand side appears on our left and left over right.

5⋮11 - Agent : Averse Elemental Pentagram

Returning to cross-over the top spheres we find a formula for averse elemental pentagram. The key change is that the Agent now the seat of spirit.

Notice a happy synchronicity, if one ignores the colors of the elemental marks and simply rotates the diagram Fire becomes Water, Earth becomes Air, and the original elemental pentagram appears.

We generally prefer to show this and subsequent trees with top paths crossed as it echos the crossing over of our own nervous system.

6⋮13 - Sense

An agent can be simple and act to sustain itself but with no ability to modify its activity in response to its environment or it can open itself to experience.

More than just sense, this sphere is the beginning of the formation of the external. Sense and feeling are opening of the agent to the other beyond the self. The structure of the other forms in relation to the agent-self.

The sigil of Sense, , is formed from the sigils for six, , and thirteen, .

6⋮13 - Sense : First Fool's Journey

The Fool's Journey is a sequential walk of the paths of the tree that starts from Chaos and follows the rule of always follow the next unwalked path of lowest emanation number. This sequence is called the Fool's Journey following the interpretive key of the Major Arcana introduced by Eden Gray.

This first Fool's Journey follows:

0 - Fool - 0
1 - Magus - 2
2 - Priestess - 1
3 - Empress - 8
4 - Emperor - 3
5 - Hierophant - 4
6 - Lovers - 9
7 - Chariot - 6
8 - Justice - 5
9 - Hermit - 10
10 - Fortune - 11
11 - Strength - 12
12 - Hanged One - 7
13 - Death - 13

This is the first tree that is walkable in this fashion beyond the first two which were trivially so. The Fool's Journey continues in subsequent trees.

7⋮17 - Thought

Thought starts with memory. It is the tracing and retracing of impressions left by sense until the impressions themselves become patterns which shape the sensation itself. Each experience is processed, filtered, and distorted by the traces of previous experience.

With the layered complexity of thought comes symbol and language. The agent gains the ability to relate to the past, future, and things not present.

The sigil of Thought, , is formed from the sigils for seven, , and seventeen, .

8⋮19 - Desire

Thought leads to desire. The agent being able to respond not just to what is but what could be creates a motivating force that puts it at odds with what is.

Desire is attachment, an energetic channel which focuses attention outwards towards manifestation of the object of desire.

The sigil of Desire, , is formed from the sigils for eight, , and nineteen, .

8⋮19 - Desire : Second Fool's Journey

... work in progress ...

9⋮23 - Matter

The attacment of desire manifests the objective external world. Where sense opened the agent up to the external this sphere crystalizes it as the objectively real, that which the agent has only limited control.

One way to think of it is that as desire manifests result it also manifests contigencies, things that come with the result but were not themselves desired. With time and repetition these contingent circumstances build. Desire shift and even the objects of previous desire can be come unwanted burdens. The power of desire to manifest results becomes diluted due to what it has already done.

The sigil of Matter, , is formed from the sigils for nine, , and twenty-three, .

10⋮29 - Soul

Up until now all of the steps of emanation can be understood as solipsistic. Manifestation itself is inherently subjective, but it isn't experienced as subjective until the agent is subsumed into the objective. The encoding of the agent itself into objective manifestation is the Soul. Soul is created by interaction of the process of void emanation with matter.

Attaining a soul makes the agent a thing in the world. It makes it a self able to be itself in communication with other selves. Becoming matter ensouled, spirit embodied, the agent transcends itself to become one among others.

The sigil of Soul, , is formed from the sigils for ten, , and twenty-nine, .

11⋮31 - Kia

Through this the process of emanations each sphere acts as a filter of the flow of void through being. At the bottom of the tree is Kia, which is the pure void within being that is not any aspect of any of the spheres which came before. Kia is the seat of consciousness, free will, and the ineffible self that is neither soul, nor body, nor even the agent through which the process made soul and body.

The sigil of Kia, , is formed from the sigils for eleven, , and thirty-one, .
